What is a non person-centred approach to dementia care?
If person-centred dementia care is tailored to supporting each individual to live well with their diagnosis, then a non person-centred approach to dementia care is the exact opposite.
A non person-centred or ‘one size fits all’ approach to dementia care is unlikely to meet the needs of someone living with dementia, as every individual’s experience of dementia, and therefore the type and level of support that they need, is different. A non person-centred approach doesn’t take into account the wellbeing of the individual, the things that are important to them, or what helps them to feel like themselves.
By contrast, good dementia care empowers the individual living with dementia to remain as independent as possible, to maintain their hobbies and interests, and to live a full and fulfilling life regardless of their diagnosis. All of this alongside supporting them with the effective management of any dementia symptoms which they experience, and providing any personal care or medication support they may need.
At Somerset Care, we are passionate about providing person-centred dementia care, which takes care of the whole person and supports them to live the life they choose. Whether in one of our specialist dementia care homes or in your own home, we tailor our care and support to meet your individual needs.
