What is a physical disability?
A physical disability is a long-term condition which limits or impairs an individual’s mobility, dexterity or stamina. This can include sensory impairment, restricted movement or loss of physical function.
A physical disability can be inherited (in the case of genetic conditions like Muscular Dystrophy, which cause muscles to weaken over time), be caused by an injury, or result from a medical event (such as a stroke) or illness (including autoimmune diseases like Multiple Sclerosis).
Not all physical disabilities are visible, but all have a long-term impact which can mean that the individual needs specialist physical disability support in order to live well with their condition.
How many people have a physical disability?
According to disability equality charity, Scope, there are around 16 million disabled people in the UK, including 23% of all working age adults.
Our support for young adults with physical disabilities is designed to challenge the stereotypes and assumptions about what a disabled person cannot do, and instead focus on empowering and enabling individuals to overcome the barriers they face.
How to support someone with a physical disability
For physical disability care to be effective, it must be person-centred and truly tailored to the individual, how their physical disability presents itself, and their desired outcome.
Sadly, young adults with physical disabilities often experience limited opportunities to aspire and achieve in life, due to the assumptions made about them. We passionately believe that this should not be the case, and, through the provision of individually-tailored physical disability care for adults, in a fully-accessible and supportive environment, we support individuals to overcome hurdles and exceed expectations.
By working alongside young adults with physical disabilities to understand what is important to them, we can provide the appropriate type and level of physical disability support to enable them to live well, despite their disability.
The Halcon Centre is a vibrant, light-hearted environment where humour abounds and young adults with physical disabilities are treated as equals, supported to achieve and can enjoy a laugh with fellow residents and the expert team who provide the physical disability care they need.

We believe that care homes for young adults with physical disabilities should be places where younger adults can feel at home – they should be tailored to their age and outlook on life, as well as being adapted to their physical disability.
