What is emergency care for the elderly, and how does it work?

Whether you need emergency day care or respite care, urgent home care or an immediate care home placement, emergency care responds to an immediate need by providing the tailored, person-centred care an individual needs in order to stay safe.

Some of the reasons people need emergency care include:

  • The need for short-term support with rehabilitation following an illness, injury or fall.
  • Support to regain mobility, independence or confidence to return home upon discharge from hospital.
  • A sudden change or escalation in care needs, perhaps resulting in a requirement for additional care visits, specialist dementia support or round-the-clock nursing care.
  • Reassurance for concerned family members who live far away or are unable to directly provide the support their loved one needs.
  • A breakdown in existing care arrangements, which puts an individual’s health or wellbeing at risk.

What are the types of emergency care?

If you find yourself in an elderly care crisis situation, Somerset Care’s expert care advisors are on hand to help you find care and support which meets your specific needs. In all instances, we will work with you to arrange an urgent assessment of your care needs, to ensure that we understand the type, level and frequency of support you need in order to be safe and feel reassured.

Urgent home care

Our professional care teams can visit you to provide the urgent support you need to stay safe and well in your own home. Home care can encompass everything from welfare check ins, to the delivery of personal care, medication and mealtime support, assistance with attending appointments, or even round-the-clock, live-in care. Home care is designed to support and prolong independence and safety within your own home, and can be arranged on an ad hoc or ongoing basis, according to your individual requirements.

Quick turnaround day care

Ensuring you or your loved ones have a safe place to go during the day. Day care includes a homecooked meal and refreshments, access to activities and entertainment, in a safe and warm environment supported by expert carers.

Emergency respite care

Whether you need short-term care and reassurance during rehabilitation, or somewhere safe and comfortable to stay if your regular carer is unable to support you, a short-term respite break could be the answer you are looking for. Respite stays in Somerset Care’s residential, nursing and dementia care homes can be booked ahead or arranged quickly, subject to availability.

Urgent dementia support

If you are concerned that an individual who is living with dementia is at risk, perhaps because they are disorientated, agitated or walk with purpose, we can provide emergency support and guidance to ensure they are safe and stimulated. We understand that in a sudden care crisis, you need a rapid response, and will work with you to build an urgent package of dementia support – whether in the individual’s own home or one of our specialist dementia care homes – to provide safety and peace of mind.

Immediate care home placement

If your ongoing care needs have suddenly escalated and can no longer be safely managed at home, it might be time to consider making a longer-term move into residential care. We understand that this isn’t always something which can be planned for in advance, and so do everything we can to support emergency admissions into our residential, dementia and nursing care homes.

Who is emergency care for?

Emergency care is designed to support the following people with urgent support to meet specific care requirements:

  • Individuals who need additional support following a fall, illness or injury – Emergency care helps people to get back on their feet, regaining mobility, independence, confidence and wellbeing.
  • Family members in crisis – Urgent care supports families who are concerned for the safety and wellbeing of a loved one, ensuring that tailored care and support is in place to meet their individual needs.
  • Non-local or overstretched family carers – Emergency care can relieve the burden of guilt from those who wish to support their loved ones but are unable to do so due to distance or other commitments. Arranging person-centred care quickly, provides the much-needed reassurance that loved ones are in safe hands.
  • Those experiencing a sudden change in care needs – Whether a long-term condition has escalated or a new diagnosis has been made, if you or a loved one are struggling to live safely and independently at home, emergency care helps to get support measures in place quickly to meet your changing needs or circumstances.
