How Somerset Care helps families find suitable urgent care placements

When it comes to arranging care, we understand that you can’t always rely on having the luxury of time. Whilst some people like to plan ahead for their future care needs, for others, the realisation that expert support is required can arise suddenly.

We’re here to support families find fast care home placements within Somerset Care settings, which meet their unique care requirements. With 22 care homes across Somerset and Devon, offering a wide range of expert respite, residential, dementia and nursing care, Somerset Care is well-placed to support you in finding the care you need, when you need it.

Understanding what type of emergency care is needed

The first step to securing an urgent care home space, is to understand the type of care – and therefore type of care home – that is needed. Emergency care may be needed as the result of a sudden illness or injury, or where existing care needs escalate to a point where they can no longer be safely managed at home. Each individual’s needs are likely to be different, and will determine the type of care home placement which would be appropriate for them.

Before making any care arrangements, a care provider will ask for a care assessment to be carried out – this might be at home, in hospital, or in another setting, depending upon the circumstances. A care assessment will look at what support the individual needs to ensure their safety and wellbeing, and will help to narrow down the options for care homes which provide the appropriate type and level of care.

Seeking emergency care doesn’t have to mean a long-term move into a care home – it could simply be a little help to rest and recover during a short respite stay, to ensure that when the individual returns home, they can do so safely. The right fast care home placement will be the one which can address the individual’s care needs at that point in time, and for as long as is required.

How to arrange an immediate private care home placement

It goes without saying, that if the urgent care is to be privately funded (by the individual or their family), you will have free choice of all care homes which have availability and can provide the appropriate type and level of care. If you are in this position, start by contacting the care provider for your preferred home, who will be able to discuss the options available to you.

Somerset Care’s expert team of care advisors can provide all of the information you need – including alternative settings to consider, should your initial preference be unavailable or unsuitable – to help you reach an informed care decision.

If the care will be fully or partially paid for by a funding body, such as the relevant Local Authority or the NHS, they will need to be involved in selecting and securing an urgent care home space.
