Nursing home managers invited for tea with royalty

It’s not every day that you receive an invitation to a garden party with royalty, but that is exactly what happened for our Registered Managers Sue Harvey, from Calway House in Taunton, and Sue Monger, from Stockmoor Lodge in Bridgwater.

The two nursing home managers were among 6,000 invited guests at a very special garden party at Buckingham Palace earlier this month. After enjoying a delicious lunch and soaking up the beauty of the palace gardens, Sue and Sue were able to greet the royal party and exchange a few words with HRH King Charles, whereupon they proudly declared their Somerset roots and connection to Somerset Care!

An almost unbelievable opportunity

As Sue Monger explains, the pair initially thought their invitation was too good to be true.

“When myself and Sue Harvey discovered that we had been nominated to attend the Royal event, we both initially thought it must be a scam!

“To receive such an invite to a Royal event at Buckingham Palace seemed not just incredible opportunity that we had never dreamt of, but such an honour to be representing Stockmoor Lodge, Calway House and Somerset Care as a whole.

“On arrival, we chose to queue at Hyde Park Corner gate with around 6,000 other attendees. The atmosphere was alive with positive energy as we chatted to others from around the UK and the fabulous work that they had achieved.

“We were all excited to discover what was behind the 8 foot wall. On entering, it was an island of peace and tranquillity. Being one of the largest gardens in the UK at approx. 39 acres, it was an incredible sight.”

Mingling with royalty

“After a splendid lunch and refreshments, we were asked to form a queue on the lawn where the Royals would greet the 6000 visitors.

“We were lucky to be in close quarters with the King, who was genuinely interested in each attendee, asking where they were from.

“Sue Harvey proudly announced that she was from Somerset and worked at Somerset Care Ltd. I was lost for words as this was as a surreal moment.

“We both agreed that we never expected to receive an invite in our lifetime, but this is certainly something we will never forget, and will be proud to share with our families and grandchildren.”
