Norman meets his Knight in shining armour

It’s not everyday that you get to meet your lifelong hero, but that is exactly what happened to 96-year-old Norman this month.

A lifetime of loyalty

Norman, who is a resident of our Inver House care home in Bembridge, on the Isle of Wight, grew up in Portsmouth, and is a lifelong supporter of Portsmouth Football Club. He has fond memories of going to watch their home games with his father when he was a young boy – an experience which sparked a long-term loyalty to the club and its players. Until fairly recently Norman was a Portsmouth FC season-ticket holder and he also played football for local team, Wymering FC, in his younger years.

It has always been Norman’s dream to meet his footballing hero Alan Knight, who was goalkeeper at Portsmouth from 1978-2000, played in the England Under 21s team in 1983, and was awarded an MBE in 2001. This month, Norman’s team of carers at Inver House made his dream come true.

A dream come true

When Norman’s family came to visit earlier this month, he was surprised to learn that they an extra guest with them, and thrilled to discover that it was Alan Knight MBE. The team at Inver House had secretly aranged for his sporting to hero to visit the home and spend some time with Norman and his loved ones.

The pair chatted about the team, fondly remembering players and recalling matches that Alan played in and Norman watched. In Norman’s own words:

“That was a dream I have always had, and now the dream has come true.”

Bearing gifts

Alan didn’t visit empty-handed; he brought gifts for Noman including an official football shirt signed by all the Portsmouth FC players, along with it’s certificate of authenticity. Alan has also arranged for Norman to receive a programme for every match Portsmouth FC play at home during the season.

Norman was extremely moved and touched by Alan’s visit, and his family commented how happy he looked, and how this special treat had really made his day.

They say you should never meet your heroes, but we don’t think that Norman would agree!
