What is the difference between domiciliary care and residential care?

Also known as home care, domiciliary care is a bespoke package of support that is delivered via scheduled care visits to the individual’s own home. By contrast, residential care is provided to those staying or living in a dedicated residential care home – this can include short-term respite breaks, as well as long-term residential care.

Both domiciliary care and residential care are specialist, person-centred support packages tailored to the individual’s unique needs, supporting them to live they life they choose.

Domiciliary care, or home care, supports an individual to stay safe, happy and healthy within their own home. A domiciliary care package can include everything from help with household chores, grocery shopping and mealtimes, to personal care and medication management. It can be a way of helping someone to get back on their feet after illness or injury, enabling them to get out and about in their community, or supporting them to retain treasured hobbies and interests. In short, domiciliary care is whatever support the individual needs in order to live a fulfilling life within the familiar surroundings of their own home.

Residential care homes offer a slightly different package of expert care and support for those who live or stay there. If running your own home is becoming a burden, a move into a residential care home relieves you of the responsibility for all household tasks, laundry, cleaning, meals and utilities, which are included as standard. A residential care home may also be able to offer a higher level of specialist care, including 24/7 nursing care, for those requiring increased support.
