Strategies to support positive behaviour
Positive behaviour support is a core element of effective learning disabilities support. By enabling and supporting positive behaviour, the individual is empowered to live the life they choose. This not only reduces the occurrence of behaviours which challenge but also the need for reactive, restrictive practices which may otherwise have been necessary to ensure the individual’s safety.
Somerset Care’s Realise team are passionate about using proactive strategies to support positive behaviour when working alongside individuals with learning disabilities, acquired brain injury or autism.
Positive behaviour support begins with getting to know the individual, their ambitions in life and the barriers they will need to overcome in order to achieve them. From this, the team can work with the individual and their loved ones to create a plan that enables them to progress towards their goals, helping them lead a more fulfilling and rewarding daily life.
Historically, reactive strategies in supporting positive behaviour were a common approach to learning disabilities care, however, this method generally looks to tackle the symptoms (rather than the cause) of behaviours which challenge. By contrast, a proactive approach to supporting positive behaviour aims to remove the frustrations which can result in behaviours which challenge, helping the individual to feel better understood, listened to, and more in control of their life choices.
By removing barriers to achievement and utilising strategies to support positive behaviour, person-centred learning disabilities care puts the individual first, and enables them to live the life they choose.
