How to care for someone with learning disabilities

Effective learning disability care is person-centred; in other words, it is uniquely tailored to the individual receiving support.

The term ‘learning disability’ is very broad, but a learning disability will affect different individuals in different ways, meaning that their learning disability support requirements will also be different. Add to this that every person with a learning disability is an individual, with their own unique hopes, dreams and wishes in life, and it’s not hard to see why care for learning disabilities needs to be tailored to the individual.

The best way to care for someone with learning disabilities is to get to know them, and understand what’s important to them, what they enjoy, and what they want to achieve with the right support in place. This could be help to acquire life skills to enable them to live more independently, assistance to secure employment or a voluntary placement, adaptations which allow them to continue to enjoy their hobbies and interests, or perhaps the practical and emotional support they need to feel confident to attend an event.

The right care for learning disabilities can be life-changing and life-affirming. By starting with the individual, and creating a person-centred learning disability care plan for them, you can truly be part of an empowering journey which enables them to live the life they choose.
