Do you have to pay for nursing care?

Unless you qualify for financial support from the NHS or your Local Authority, you may have to pay for nursing care. Depending upon your individual circumstances, this could be a contribution towards the overall cost of your nursing care, or you may be asked to cover the full cost yourself.

To find out if you will have to pay for nursing care, the first step is to arrange a nursing care assessment to discuss your day-to-day nursing care requirements, and any long-term or complex medical conditions you may live with.

If you are assessed as having a ‘primary health need’, you may qualify for financial support from the NHS, via either their Continuing Healthcare (CHC) or Funded Nursing Care (FNC) schemes. If you meet certain criteria, the NHS may cover the full cost of your nursing care, or make a fixed contribution paid directly to your nursing care home, which will be deducted from your nursing care fees.

If you do not qualify for financial assistance from the NHS, you may still be eligible for Local Authority support for your nursing care home fees. Your Local Authority will assess your financial circumstances against an ‘upper capital limit’ set by the Government. As a result, you will either considered a ‘self-funder’ (required to cover the full cost of your nursing care fees yourself), or qualify for a Local Authority contribution towards your nursing care home fees.
