Adjustments to care for learning disabilities

All person-centred care should be tailored to the individual and their support requirements – and adjustments to care for learning disabilities are no different.

In order for learning disability care to truly benefit the recipient, consideration must be given to what care the individual needs in order to live well with their learning disability, alongside what they are hoping to achieve with the right support in place.

Care for learning disabilities is all about enriching lives and enabling individuals to achieve and enjoy the things that are important to them. In order to do this, they may need certain adjustments put in place as part of their learning disability care, for instance to help them to communicate in different ways, or to help them to build particular life skills which enable them to live more independently and be less reliant on loved ones.

Examples of adjustments could include easy-read documents to make information easier to understand and digest, adaptations around the home to make it easier to move around and undertake everyday tasks, or working with employers to support individuals to secure work or voluntary placements that take into account how a learning disability might affect an individual in a workplace environment.

All adjustments to care for learning disabilities should be tailored to support each individual to live the life they choose.
