Moorhaven receives donation in memory of Wassailing legend
Moorhaven care home in Taunton has received a generous donation from the Curry Rivel Wassailers, in memory of ‘Budgie’, a much-loved resident and friend.
Remembering Budgie
Gary Eagle, who was known to many as ‘Budgie’, called Moorhaven his home until his passing at the end of 2025. A well-known retired builder, Budgie took part in Wassailing traditions for many years, as well as being a keen sportsman and playing county-level darts for Somerset.

Earlier this month, Dick Horsey and Ben Cousins of the Curry Rivel Wassailers presented a £350 cheque in Budgie’s memory to the team at Moorhaven care home in Taunton.
Dick Horsey explains Budgie’s connection to the Wassailing tradition:
“Gary Eagle, best known as Budgie, was one of the Curry Rivel Wassailers for over 30 years. This is an ancient Pagan tradition that takes place in January every year.
“We raised £350 through our Wassailing this year, and it seemed only right and fitting to donate this to Moorhaven care home in Budgie’s memory.”
A fitting tribute
Moorhaven’s Registered Manager, Michaela Cooper, adds:
“On behalf of everyone at Moorhaven, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Curry Rivel Wassailers for their thoughtful donation in memory of Gary (Budgie).
“Like so many people we have spoken to, we were all incredibly fond of Gary. We loved hearing about his passion for keeping the Wassailing tradition alive, and also how he had come to be awarded the many sporting trophies he had on display in his room here.
“We are planning to use this generous donation to set up a memorial area at Moorhaven in Gary’s honour, and to organise a trip out for our residents when the weather improves, to enable them to create wonderful memories.”
