Portcullis House residents set to cycle the world

Residents at Portcullis House care home in Langport are all set to pedal around the world, thanks to a generous donation from a local committee.

Drayton Village Fair committee were moved to purchase cycling equipment for the dementia, respite and residential care home, when a former committee member became a resident at Portcullis House earlier this year.

Brenda has been described as a ‘stalwart’ of the Drayton community, having given many years of support to the local church and playing an active role on various committees in the village.

Worldwide virtual travel

Visitors to Brenda’s new home at Portcullis House observed how much she and her fellow residents enjoyed ‘cycling through’ worldwide locations with the use of a set of cycling pedals and watching online videos – all from the comfort of the lounge. The activity prompted discussions and reminiscences about world travel and the places they saw on the screen, whilst providing an opportunity for some gentle exercise.

Whilst hugely beneficial to both the emotional wellbeing and physical health of residents, this activity was limited to three residents at a time, as there were only three sets of cycling pedals available. The committee of Drayton Village Fair generously offered to purchase seven further sets of cycling pedals, to enable more residents to take part in this beneficial activity, making their virtual trips around the world more of a group activity than a solo expedition.

Supporting dementia care in the community

Jacqui Price, Secretary of Drayton Village Fair, will present their generous donation of cycling pedals to Portcullis House on 18th June, aptly during Care Home Open Week. She explains why they feel moved to make this donation:

“The committee of Drayton Village Fair like to choose a worthy cause to benefit from funds raised at the bi-annual event, and this year we were keen to use the funds to support dementia care in the local area.

“We felt that using some of the funds to support dementia-led activities at Portcullis House would be a lovely way to honour our friend, Brenda, and are pleased that our donation of cycling pedals will enable more residents to join in with this beneficial activity which boosts physical and mental health.”

Stimulating and meaningful activities

Nicola Daykin, Registered Manager of Portcullis House, tells of the difference this donation will make to the home’s residents:

“As a specialist dementia care home, we know just how important it is for our residents to participate in stimulating, meaningful activities which prompt discussion and engagement. We have found our virtual cycling tours to be hugely popular and beneficial for our residents, so having the ability for more residents to join in, is just wonderful.

“On behalf of Brenda and her fellow Portcullis House residents, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Drayton Village Fair committee for their generous donation, which has made this a reality.”
