Matt to conquer 24 Peaks charity challenge
Matt Middleton-Pfeiffer, Deputy Manager at our Field House residential care home in Shepton Mallet, is training for an epic challenge in support of WHY (We Hear You), a Frome-based charity which provides free, professional counselling to anyone affected or bereaved by cancer.
Scaling extreme heights for charity
Over the course of two days (8-9th September 2023), Matt is challenging himself to climb all 24 of the Lake District’s peaks, including Scafell Pike, the highest at more than 3,000ft. He will be trekking for 12 hours each day, hiking around 28 miles and climbing a combined total of 12,500ft during the challenge.
Matt was inspired to take on the 24 Peaks by his friend Rachel Clark, who herself received counselling and support from WHY following the tragic loss of her mother to Leukaemia. This is the latest in a series of fundraising challenges that the friends have undertaken for WHY, which have included Guinness World Record breaking rowing and skittles efforts.
A personal challenge
Matt says: “This year, Rach asked me to join her on the 24 peaks challenge, and I wasn’t going to say no. I am so proud to call her my friend. I have supported her and WHY in many of her events and I can’t wait to complete this challenge with her.
“WHY is purely funded by donations. The money raised helps hundreds of people to receive support, whether they have been diagnosed with cancer or a terminal illness, are struggling to come to terms with a family member’s cancer diagnosis, or are grieving the loss of loved one.
“WHY helped rebuild my friend and make her the amazing person she is.
“On 8-9th September, I will be climbing 24 peaks in the Lake District to raise funds for this incredible charity. I’ll be ascending 9 peaks on day one, followed by the remaining 15 on day two. It’s not going to be easy, so over the coming months I will be training hard, climbing Glastonbury Tor a lot, and finding as many steep slopes as I can locally to practice and get my legs ready!
“This is the first time I have set myself an individual fundraising target for WHY, rather than fundraising as part of a team. I am excited for the event and hopeful that I can meet my fundraising target so that WHY can continue their vital work.
“Thank you to everyone who has already donated, including Somerset Care. If you would like to support the work of WHY, please visit my fundraising page. Thank you.”
