Supporting Ben to follow his sporting passions

Cricket-mad Ben lives with Type 1 Diabetes and a mild learning disability, conditions which can lead to him being vulnerable in certain social settings. However, thanks to the support of his Realise team, Ben is able to continue to follow his sporting passions.

For the past 5 years, Realise have been supporting Ben to live independently, manage his diabetes and enjoy the freedom to choose the activities he takes part in and make decisions about how he wants to live his life. Their support has also enabled Ben’s family to go back to being family, allowing them to enjoy spending time together without the pressure of being his sole carers.

Ben plays for the Somerset Disability Cricket Team, a pastime which he absolutely loves. He is proud to put on his team shirt (which is sponsored by Realise) and take part in the game. When he’s not playing cricket he loves to watch sport, going to see the T20 matches at Somerset Country Cricket Ground with his carers, following his favourite Torquay and Manchester United football teams, and also keeping up with the ice hockey.

The support of Realise has enabled Ben to be much more independent, and put him in control of his own life choices.

He has 24/7 support from his Realise team at his home, but can also choose to go out on his own or with friends knowing that the team are just a phone call away should he need them. This enabled him to travel on the bus to Bridgwater College whilst he completed his course there, helping him to gain the skills and knowledge he needs to live the life he chooses.

Realise has given Ben the gift of freedom and choice within a supportive environment, helping him to gain confidence, build up a supportive social network, and keep enjoying the things he loves.
