Somerset Care is supporting Dignity Action Day on 1st February.

Dignity Action Day is a national initiative led by the Dignity in Care Campaign and its key partners to bring staff and members of the public together to make a difference to those in care. The campaign is supported by Dame Joan Bakewell, Dignity in Care Ambassador, who wrote the foreword to Somerset Centenarians.
Critchill Court, one of our residential homes in Frome, Somerset, is holding a tea dance, cake decorating and manicures and pedicures. On the Isle of Wight our subsidiary Isle Care has been chosen to represent residential care at an event to demonstrate how dignity is applied for Residential and Learning Disabilities Care.

Somerset Care at Home in Minehead wish John a happy retirement at the age of 82

Staff at Somerset Care at Home in Minehead said farewell to a dear friend and colleague this week as John Sloman retired at the age of 82.
John has worked as a care and support worker for over 16 years and achieved his NVQ qualification in 2009 at the age of 80, resulting in him being nominated for and winning an in-house award for training.
The team at Somerset Care at Home in Minehead arranged a retirement tea party at the office to bid farewell to John, inviting fellow staff members and service users who had been supported by him over the years.
Speaking on the occasion Shirley Chapman, Operations Manager said, “John has worked so hard and will be dearly missed by his colleagues and service users, we all wish him the very best for the future and a relaxing retirement.”

Alison Godwin is appointed as Community Services Manager for Bridgwater

Alison Goodwin Somerset Care at Home is pleased to announce that Alison Godwin has been appointed as Community Services Manager for its Bridgwater office.

Alison joined Somerset Care at Home in September 2008 as Deputy Manager for the Frome and Bath area. She starts her new role on Monday 16th January 2012 and said, “I am delighted to have been appointed as Community Services Manager for the Bridgwater office and would like to thank everyone who has supported me over the last few years.”

Jane Lynch is appointed Assistant Director for residential services

Jane Lynch The Somerset Care Group has announced the appointment of an Assistant Director for residential services.

After a rigorous recruitment process, the Board of the Somerset Care Group were delighted to invite Jane Lynch to become the company’s new Assistant Director for residential services.

Jane started working for the Somerset Care Group in 1991 as a Supervisor at Wyndham House in Minehead. She then went on to manage Croft House in Williton, which was the first home in the company to develop a specialist dementia care wing. Currently working as an Operations Manager, Jane is also the company lead in dementia, having worked closely with Professor Alex Haslam and his team from the Clinical and Social Psychology department at Exeter University, which resulted in the company being presented with a national dementia research award in 2010.

Within the last year Jane has also taken on the role as Quality Assurance Manager, working with a small team to develop a robust company wide QA system.

Speaking on her appointment, Jane said, “I am delighted with my new appointment and look forward to working with our exceptionally talented team of managers.”

Alyson Martin, Chief Executive of the Somerset Care Group, added “Jane has demonstrated many achievements over the years and is highly talented in the field of social care; we look forward to her leading our care home services.”

Jane will assume the position of Assistant Director for residential services from 1st January 2012.

Chris Humphrey is appointed Assistant Director for community services

Chris Humphries The Somerset Care Group has announced the appointment of an Assistant Director for community services.

After a rigorous recruitment process, the Board of the Somerset Care Group is delighted to invite Chris Humphrey to become the company’s new Assistant Director for community services.

Chris started working for the Somerset Care Group in October 2011 on a two year contract as Service Development Manager for Somerset Care at Home. The role was created to establish reablement across the community based services. Chris is an Occupational Therapist by profession but has most recently worked as a senior manager in Social Care.

Speaking on her appointment, Chris said, “I am delighted to have joined Somerset Care at this time of huge changes in social care and to have been appointed to the role of Assistant Director of community services. I hope my skills and experience, added to that of my colleagues, will help us to rise to the challenges to come.”

Alyson Martin, Chief Executive of the Somerset Care Group, added “Supporting people to live independently in their own homes remains a priority and Chris brings a wealth of expertise from her previous roles to enable our teams to deliver quality community services.”

Chris will assume her position of Assistant Director for community services from 1st January 2012.

Popham Court receives highest Gold Standards Framework Award

Somerset Care is celebrating this week as Popham Court in Wellington received the highest award of “Beacon” status in the Gold Standards Framework Award. The Gold Standards Framework is an award designed to ensure quality care and support is given to people nearing the end of life.

The staff team at Popham Court are extremely pleased with their success. Hazel Jones, Manager said, “It’s a credit to the commitment and dedication of the staff team to achieve this award”.

Popham Court offers residential care in two separate buildings, The Court is a 37 bed home which provides residential and day care in a charming grade II listed building. Popham House, situated on the grounds of The Court offers nursing care to 37 residents.

Alyson Martin Chief Executive, said, “The attainment of this prestigious award demonstrates the high quality of care and support provided by the staff team, we are delighted with their success”.

Five other Somerset Care homes have also received the Gold Standards Frameworks Award, Milton House in Bridgwater, Calway House in Taunton, Cary Brook in Castle Cary, Critchill Court in Frome and Croft House in Williton.

Julie Cullis and Diane Allen are awarded the Harry Patch Award

Our photograph shows: Julie Cullis, Chris Davies Non-Executive Director and Diane Allen Somerset Care are pleased to announce that this year’s Harry Patch Award has been presented to two of their home managers. The presentation was made at the Group’s annual Christmas Managers Meeting, which was held at the County Cricket Club on Thursday 15th December.

Julie Cullis, manager of Oak Trees in Rhode Lane, Bridgwater and Diane Allen, manager of Croft House in Bridge Street, Williton were presented with a Bristol Blue Glass Bowl at the meeting to mark their achievements.

Julie, who works as the manager at Oak Trees in Bridgwater, has also been supporting the Quality Assurance process for the Group, helping to develop and co-ordinate a robust system that is used across the company.

Diane, who works as the manager at newly built Croft House in Williton has put in copious amounts of extra time and effort to the help the development of Croft House, including its’ official Royal Opening which took place in October.

Alyson Martin, Chief Executive of the Group, said, “Julie and Diane are both exceptional managers and we are proud to be able to recognise their achievements through this award”.

Alan Roca is appointed Deputy Manager at Calway House

Somerset Care is pleased to announce the appointment of Alan Roca (R.G.N) as Deputy Manager of Calway House in Taunton. Alan has worked for the company for five years as a Senior Nurse, and recently joined the company’s rising stars programme. Speaking on his recent appointment Alan said, “I’m so pleased to be starting the new year with a new role at Calway House. I’d like to thank everyone that has supported me throughout the last five years”. Alan will start his new post as Deputy Manager on 2nd January 2012.

Somerset Care staff dress up as Santa in aid of Children’s Hospice South West

Somerset Care staff dress up as Santa On Friday 16th December staff from Somerset Care’s Central Office traded their work clothes for Santa outfits in aid of Children’s Hospice South West.

Eleven Santas and two helpers in reindeer head bands walked the route of Blackbrook Business Park and Dean Gate Business Park collecting donations. The group raised £257 on the day and added their own charity bonus ball fund, bringing the total to just over £310.

Shirley Chapman, Operations Manager for Somerset Care at Home and organiser of the event, said, “I’m so pleased with the money we’ve raised for Children’s Hospice South West, and would like to say a huge thank you to everyone that donated. A special thank you also needs to go to my colleagues for dressing up and helping with the fundraising.”
